Thank you, Paul, I think it’s very important to name our grief. I know many of us spent the Fourth of July in some sort of mourning. I am reminded that our recent former president, who had endured so many personal tragedies, said “Turn your pain into purpose.” May we be inspired to help restore that which feels so lost to us now.
“Turn your pain into purpose” - what a perfect frame for this moment. The fact that so many of us spent July 4th in mourning tells us something important about what we’re called to protect and rebuild. Thank you for this.
Kate - I hear what you are saying. I meditated prior to participating in a local parade with my Congressman. Halfway down the route I felt so saddened by what is happening in my country - simultaneous with my absolute belief that being with that Congressman - and others of like mind - was the right thing to do at that moment - and was one small thing under my control.
Denise, thank you so much for sharing your whole thoughtful process. I always feel better when I get myself out the door to be with others with like minds. I feel we all really need community these days. I love that you had the opportunity and made a point to be there to support your Congressman. That seems very important. I’m sure they deeply appreciated every person who showed up to stand with them. I have all D elected representatives and call the office once a week just to thank them and their whole staff for standing in the breach for us. I have to believe that even things that might seem small add up, nourishing us all.
I went on a hike in the mountains on the 4th too Paul. Nature is my healing place. Then yesterday I went to a protest at an ICE Detention center and plunged into despair. Grief is what I’m feeling today and I went to you this morning for help in naming that. Thank you Paul.
This means everything - that you found healing in nature, kept showing up at the detention center, and trusted yourself to name the grief. You’re modeling exactly what staying human looks like. Thank you for that gift. 🙏🏻☮️⛰️

It’s as if you were inside my head & my heart…thank you for capturing all the many things my entire family have been feeling.
I have been feeling like I’m losing my mind!
Your call to action has been heard, thank you. Keep on writing because I know I’ll need reminders for the long haul.
